Timezone: CST
Other Characters: Riku (d2), Eithan Paine, Agent South Dakota, Jacqli
Character: Yosuke Hanamura
Series: Persona 4
Deviance: d1 - canon
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Canon Used: The game! With some ~flavoring~ from the anime adaptation, but yeah, mostly the game.
Appearance: there's this huge image. And here's another shot. And here, have some more.
Psychology: The short of it: Yosuke is an outgoing, slightly clumsy, snarky city kid stuck in a small town. While he very, very often sticks his foot in his mouth or otherwise makes an ass out of himself, he's still a sharp, capable, loyal young man whose heart is in the right place at the end of the day. His greatest fears are isolation, boredom, not belonging, and being useless. And cockroaches.
Despite his clumsiness and his apparent knack for not watching what he says, he is capable of leadership. He is shown in canon to be one of the first to actually put two and two together, so to speak. He is also pretty good at reading people, even if he doesn't always act on this particular skill set. He is the one who does the most coordination work amongst the investigation team, and the main protagonist and he are pretty much the two leaders of the bunch. There's a reason they call each other "partner"!
Unfortunately, Yosuke does still have some growing up to do. He is a little bit of an asshole - goes hand in hand with opening his mouth before his brain kicks in long enough to tell him no. He can be pretty insulting, especially if you're not expecting to hear the unfiltered thoughts of a bored-but-smart high school kid. Heck, he ends up in fights with Chie (probably his closest female friend) constantly. But whenever he's called out on his assholery, he is usually appropriately apologetic. Though it may take him some time to actually correct his behavior (or at least learn to watch it), he does make an effort.
Other Skills/Abilities: Even though he's a little new to it, Yosuke is pretty handy in a fight. He's fast, for one; his reflexes are fantastic and he has the endurance to keep dodging and striking well after others would probably have tired out. His weapons of choice are kunai, which he dual-wields.
He is also capable of summoning his Persona, Jiraiya (later, Susano-o), when needed. Jiraiya fights alongside him, usually with wind-based skills or devastating physical attacks of his own. He can also cast the only healing spell he knows this way. (Granted, it becomes a little bit better later, but still. :|)
Other Weaknesses: Electricity. One zap is enough to knock him on his ass, possibly even render him dizzy and unable to act. He's also human, and therefore squishy.
History: Yosuke Hanamura at the Megami Tensei wiki.
Canon Point: A few days after rescuing Yukiko from the TV world - the date is April 24, 2011.
Reality Description: 2011. Inaba - a small town in Japan that's know for... ... corn. ... and an old, historic inn run by the Amagi family. And... uh. ... Well, it's a small, hick town, indeed. It does not have much else going for it, other than perhaps the huge department store, Junes, that was just built there (much to some of the citizens' dismay).
There's a bit of a oddity here, though. On the other side of any TV set lies an entire world - one that seems to be completely covered in a thick, bewildering fog and crawling with creatures called "shadows". It is here that those with the power to do so can summon their Persona, which is absolutely necessary for survival in this place.
In truth, this world is a manifestation of the collective unconscious, crafted entirely from the minds, desires and whims of all of humankind (even more specifically, the people of Inaba). So the rumor floating around town of the Midnight Channel - a mysterious, fuzzy image that appears on a darkened TV on a stormy night exactly at midnight - is absolutely true, in a sense: it allows the people a glimpse into the world on the other side, fueled by whatever it is that people want to see. It's also for this reason that new locations tend to appear in the TV world: whenever someone is trapped there, their subconscious can project loud enough to form anything from a castle, an underground secret laboratory, a strip club... the possibilities are literally endless.
The shadows are dangerous. They are incredibly quick to attack anyone or anything that moves, and when provoked, a strong enough shadow can call even more shadows to it and wreak even more havoc. This is because a shadow is a suppressed self. It is everything a person seeks to hide away from the world, no matter the cost. Strictly kept secrets, feelings one refuses to feel... anything. And when a person comes face to face with their own shadow is when things get even more dangerous. If the person continues to reject their shadow, it will go berserk and seek to kill its original as it continues on its rampage. However, should a person have the strength of heart and self to accept their repressed thoughts and emotions, the shadow will be appeased and, as a reclaimed part of the self, become a Persona.
As vast as this world is, and as big of a deal as it most certainly should be, it is still a well-kept secret, only known about by a handful of people and not even fully understood by any of them. Most of this handful of people is made up of teenagers. And someone in this handful is a serial murderer, who uses the TV world to attempt to kill their victims. So with the police completely out of their depth on this one... it seems to be up to said handful of teenagers to figure everything out, as soon as they can, before something even more terrible happens.
First Person Speaking Sample: [It's been a full day, and Yosuke just can't get his mind off of that strange shop he nosily poked his head into yesterday afternoon. More importantly, he can't get over where he seemed to end up: space. Or, well, was it space? It sure looked like space, but it felt... real. But then he was back home, and everything was almost dream-like, but... the more he thinks about it, the weirder it all seems, and he's not really sure he likes the fact that he's wondering what's real and what isn't. Especially with everything involving the TVs and that other world going on...
He's on his bike, riding to school, headphones on and tuning out the rest of the world in favor of his own thoughts. Then, he swears that the next second, he's back in space.]
Oh man, it really is real! --Whoa - !!
[And then he loses all sense of balance, his bike smacks right into a hat stand. In space. Yep.
He's thrown from the bike, right over the handlebars, leaving bike and hat rack a few rolls behind as he lies on the plane floor and stares up at the stars. It takes a few seconds, but he picks himself up, groaning and rubbing at the side of his head.]
Owww... Geez, that hurt.
[The headphones come off, rest around his neck as he tosses his hair out a bit and has a look around, arms crossed.]
What the hell is up with this...? Man. First the TV, and now that shop? Hmmm... are they even related? I mean, I wouldn't be surprised, but I have this feeling that they're not. [Beat.] I don't know if that's better, or worse.
[He should probably go back to school. With his luck, someone's bound to give his class a pop quiz or something. But...]
Well, I'm here, so I may as well start looking around, huh?
[... Yep. Yosuke Hanamura: responsible student.
He walks over to his bike, picks it up, and looks around again for some other landmark to begin his wandering.]
Third Person Writing Sample: Take your pick:
→ a post that takes place in headspace
→ forced to face his shadow again
→ the repercussions of "open mouth, insert foot"
→ i have a frickton more if this isn't what you're looking for.
Did you read the rules? mmmmmmaybe. aka yes.
